How To: Organize Your Makeup

One of my favorite pastimes is scrolling through pictures of makeup storage on Instagram.  Super exciting, I know.  There's just something I love about looking at tons of makeup goodness and learning about how people store and display their makeup collections.  Just in case some of you share this quirky interest, here's a glimpse at how I'm currently storing my makeup collection.Makeupstorage1I'm using the Like-it Brick System from The Container Store and am really quite satisfied.  I definitely prefer the look of acrylic containers displayed on a vanity or bathroom counter, but since my current bathroom doesn't have much counter space, I had to look for something that would fit in the cabinet under the sink.  It's great that the Like-it Brick System is easy to customize and you can add to the collection or get different items depending on your needs.  Also, they can be used for other organization needs around the house, so it's not like you'll be stuck with something useless if you decide to use something else for makeup storage.Makeupstorage 3I have one 11-in Wide Tall Tote (far left), two 11-inch Wide Bins (middle) and two 8 1/4-inch Medium Tall Totes (far right).Makeupstorage 6 Here is a close up picture of the bottom layer (11-in Wide Tall Tote).  I used two dividers to separate the tote into compartments.  On the left, I have different foundations and face products (NARS Sheer Glow, Dior Airflash and MAC Strobe Cream, among many others).  The middle has different eyeshadow quads, lip products and a little makeup bag with lip and eye pencils.  The left compartment has my larger palettes and other random products that I don't use very often (such as a yellow MAC pigment that I just had to have).Makeupstorage 4In the second layer, I have the two medium totes stacked side-by-side on top of the larger tote.  Again, I used dividers in the tote on the left to separate my lip products (roughly) into neutrals and brights.  In the tote on the right, I used dividers to separate nail polishes and random eyeshadows and blushes that I don't use that often.Makeupstorage2On the top level, I use the two bins to keep my most used products.  I try to go through these about every week to add in products that I want to use or remove products that I want to put on the sidelines.  The (highly ambitious) goal is that I can just pull out the bin on the right and it will have everything that I need to do my makeup in the morning for work.  The bin on the left has other products that I like, but don't necessarily need each day.  Right now, some of my favorites are MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish in Superb (great highlight), NARS blush in Deep Throat (medium pink with gold shimmer), Chanel Illusion D'Ombre eyeshadow in New Moon (super sparkly cream shadow), and MAC lipstick in Rebel (really pretty plum).
